As a kid growing up in Philadelphia, I spent hours tinkering and working odd jobs for extra money. My Dad like to refinish furniture in the garage, so I'd help. We never threw anything out. It got fixed, recovered or refinished.
When I bought my first fixer upper house on Queen Anne in '94, I quickly learned that I could not afford to pay Union plumbing and electrical wages. If I was going to stay in that house, I would have to do everything myself.
Home Depot, Lowes and the local hardware stores became my favorite spots to visit. Rockler Hardware put on some great woodworking classes too. Experience was really my best teacher. Finishing the house was rewarding and challenging and soon after, friends and neighbors started calling me for help. In 2004, I decided it would be best to get licensed, bonded and insured. I founded Queen Anne Handyman.
